Yep, I totally get it; picking the right outfit for engagement photos can be a bit overwhelming. But don't stress, I've put together some guidelines to help you look fabulous and feel on point, while keeping the focus on your love story and not just your wardrobe. Now, not going to lie, I'm no fashion guru myself—I wear the exact same outfit almost every day, so don't take my word as gospel. These tips come from my past experiences, so take them as suggestions, not strict rules.
What matters most is that you guys feel like yourselves. Don't stress if you don't follow these guidelines to the tee. The key is to be comfortable, and that means wearing stuff you love and already have in your closet. So, bring those favourite old band shirts and ripped jeans if that's your jam. Some couples go shopping for "nicer" clothes, which is cool, but they sometimes wish they'd stuck to what makes them feel like themselves. In the end, who cares if you laugh at your outfits in 20 years? As long as they represent who you are right now, that's all that counts.
My number one tip for you guys is to bring a couple of outfit options.
Now, I don't want you to pack your entire wardrobe. That'll take ages for me to sort through, and it'll eat into our fun session time. A good rule of thumb is to bring a couple of shirts each, chuck in an extra dress, and bring a jacket if it's cold.
Easy as, right? We'll create some stunning natural engagement photos together!
Firstly, Do not wear anything with a big logo in it if that logo doesn't mean anything to you. When looking at your precious photos in the future it will detract from your love for your partner (the whole purpose of the shoot).
Keep it simple and subtle when it comes to patterns. Steer clear of big, loud, and chunky designs that can draw attention away from your lovely faces. Opt for smaller, more understated patterns for a clean and polished look.
Mixing patterns can be a bit overwhelming, so it's best to avoid going overboard with too many at once. Remember, we want the focus to be on you and the stunning location, not on a pattern overload.
Be prepared for the conditions and locations we'll be shooting in. If we're trekking up rocks, sturdy shoes are important. On a beach, shoes will look out of place. If it's freezing outside, get cozy and layer up with warm clothes, socks, and maybe boots. If it's hot, opt for breathable clothing or loose fitting to avoid those sweaty pit stains in the shots. The key is to be as comfortable as possible, so you can relax and enjoy the session to the fullest!
If your partner spends everyday in a T-shirt and thongs, they are not going to be comfortable in a slim fitting button-up with uncomfortable dress shoes. Dress nicely and coordinate your outfits but don't force your partner to wear anything that will make them feel uncomfortable, daggy or overdressed. They'll be way happier at the shoot if they're not forced into an outfit that just isn't them.
When the word "props'' comes to mind, I can't help but think of those cringe worthy “JUST ENGAGED” signs. But here's the thing, props don't have to be cringe. Imagine a pizza picnic with a bottle of your favourite Pétillant-Naturel and your dog. Props can include blankets, picnic rugs, cars, motorbikes, a cozy campfire, bouquet of flowers, or even a surfboard. Make sure you’re adding your unique touch to your photos.
Do whatever makes you feel your best. There's no hard and fast rule here. Personally, I'm all for keeping things real and being yourself. If you normally wear makeup go for it. Don't pay a professional to do your makeup if it doesn't make you comfortable. I reckon being true to yourself is more important than going for a glammed-up version.
But hey, if you wanna go all out with hair and makeup, go for it! If that makes you feel like a confident, empowered boss babe, do it!
Just remember to schedule it with enough time before the shoot, so we're not running late.
